Residents evacuated after hill develops large crack in Danang

Authorities in the central city of Danang have evacuated residents overnight after a large crack appeared on a hillside, sparking fears of a potential landslide.

The Danang Military Command said it had worked with local authorities on the night of October 20 to relocate households living near a fissure about 50 metres long and 50 centimetres wide on a slope in Kon Pin Village, Tra Linh Commune, roughly 35 metres from the nearest homes.

The crack has continued to widen, posing a landslide risk to nine households at the foot of the hill. Military units have been deployed to monitor the area and respond swiftly should conditions deteriorate further.

Danang authorities have also prepared plans to evacuate more than 210,000 residents as Typhoon Fengheng is forecast to bring heavy rain to the region.

Local officials are urging residents working deep in the forests to return home promptly to avoid possible accidents as weather conditions worsen.

Vice Chairman of the Danang People’s Committee Tran Nam Hung chaired an online meeting on October 20 on response measures for Typhoon Fengshen and the coming period of heavy rain.

According to Hung, Danang is predicted to experience widespread rainfall totalling 350-600mm from the night of October 22 to 27, with some areas exceeding 800mm.

Experts believe the storm will bring mild winds but extremely heavy rain, possibly surpassing the record levels of October 14, 2022.
