Rare Quang Nam monkey troop handed over to Gia Lai national park

A troop of eight rare monkeys which were cared for by an elderly woman in the central province of Quang Ngai has been handed over to Kon Ka Kinh National Park in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

A troop of eight rare monkeys which were cared for by an elderly woman in the central province of Quang Ngai has been handed over to Kon Ka Kinh National Park in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

According to Ho Trong Phuong, Director of the Quang Ngai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the monkey relocation to the national park has been completed.

The monkeys were cared of by Nguyen Thi Chat, aged 79, in Hon Tra Island, Son Tra Village, Binh Dong Commune in Quang Ngai Province's Binh Son District.

Chat used to feed the monkeys

Chat was visiting Hon Tra Island to catch snails one day when she saw the monkeys. She then gave them some fruits. Initially, the animals ran away when being fed by Chat. However, later, they became familiar with her. She came to the island daily to feed them.

The monkeys were said to come from a nearby forest which was destroyed for construction projects.

The monkeys have the scientific name of Macaca Mulatta


The forest management of Quang Ngai said that the monkeys, which has the scientific name of Macaca Mulatta, are listed among rare and endangered species.
