Rare animals rescued and released into Lam Dong forest

Authorities in Lam Dong have rescued a stump-tailed macaque and a pygmy slow loris, both endangered species, and released them back into the wild.

On August 10, Nguyen Huu Phoi’s family in Quang Tin Commune found a stump-tailed macaque lying exhausted behind their house and promptly alerted authorities. The animal was transferred to the Nam Cat Tien Protective Forest Management Board two days later.

The stump-tailed macaque is listed in Group IIB of Vietnam’s regulations on endangered and rare forest species and under CITES. Hunting, trading or keeping the animal in captivity is prohibited by law.

In a separate case, Tran Ngoc Khiem’s family in the same commune handed over a pygmy slow loris they found in their garden. The animal was released into the wild on August 7.

The slow loris is listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book and classified in Group IB, the highest legal protection level, covering endangered and rare species under CITES.

The Nam Cat Tien Protective Forest Management Board said local residents who hand over rare wildlife play an important role in protecting species at risk of extinction. The board currently manages nearly 14,200 hectares of strictly protected forest land.
