>> Vietnam teen claims he killed for games
A work by the Research Centre of Criminology and Crime Prevention, shows that of the 5,009 murder cases recorded from January 2007 to September 2010, only four percent of the killers were born in normal families. How is the origin of killers in Vietnam?

The local media has recently reported many murder cases, in which the murderers are teens. The latest case occurred last week in Bac Giang province. Le Van Luyen, nearly 18, killed three people at a goldsmith’s shop. The public was shocked by the murder. People wondered how a teen could brutally commit that massacre.
What makes kids become murderers? There are many ways that turn a good-natured child into a brutal killer. One of the most important reasons is their parents’ educating methodology.
According to a research work by the Research Centre of Criminology and Crime Prevention, based on 5,009 murder cases recorded from January 2007 to September 2010, up to 46 percent of the murderers were born in families that their parents, brothers or sisters were criminals or have illegal jobs; 18 percent of them have their parents divorced and they had to live with relatives; 14 percent live in families of poor education level; 7 percent from rich families; 11 from poor families; and only 4 percent from normal families.
Alarm bell
Senior Lieutenant General, Nguyen Minh Duc, deputy director of the Research Center of Criminology and Crime Prevention, one of the authors of the above research work, said that the environment and education of families has made great impacts on the personality and action of children, and it can directly or indirectly push a person to murder acts.
In the massacre at the goldsmith’s shop in Bac Giang, Le Van Luyen’s parents are butchers, who could afford their son to go to school, but Luyen quit school very early. He worked far from home at the school age, the age that needs education and guidance of adults. As a result, from a good-natured boy, as his neighbors commented, Luyen has become a drug addict and a murderer.
Investigating the world of homeless children, who work as shoe-shining boys, construction workers, and lottery ticket sellers, etc., researchers discovered their self-indulgence lives. Without a guiding light from their families, they make money by every way and spend money in dangerous hobbies like online games, drugs and they are ready to be at war for trivial disagreements.
Even children in rich families or families of high education level can become criminals if their parents focus on their career and are not interested in their children.
In recent years, there are criminals who come from well-off families. Notably, these are farmer families, who were poor in the past and suddenly became rich after one night thanks to selling their field. These people have money but lack knowledge to manage their money. They overindulge their children, which make their children become computer gamers, gambling or drug addicts. The path from addiction to crime is very close.
Senior Lieutenant General, Nguyen Minh Duc, said that most of the murderers were poorly educated, had no stable jobs. This is the major reasons leading to contradictions.
Duc also said that most of the victims were relatives, friends or acquaintances of murderers. Internal conflicts were not solved, resulted in shooting acts, which caused death. The murders that originated from instant conflicts were mainly caused by people at the age of 16 to 30, who are poor at controlling themselves.
In many cases, teens killed their parents or neighbors. In May 2009, Nghiem Viet Thanh, 18, in Hai Duong province killed his father and chopped the body into pieces to throw into a river. Thanh’s parents went abroad to earn their living when Thanh was very small. When Thanh was 15, his father returned home to take care of him. However, the father educated his son by severe measures. Living far from his parents for a long time, Thanh was addicted to gambling and online games. Being insulted by his father, Thanh went crazy and killed his father. On September 1, 2011, the court sentenced Thanh to death.
Though murders are kids, they have to expiate their crime but their parents must be condemned.
