The scene of the accident.
The accident occurred at approximately 8.15 am on May 26 as a truck driven by 34-year-old Truong Van Den was travelling along National Highway 1A. When a motorbike ahead attempted to turn, the driver swerved to the right to avoid a collision but failed to regain control.
The truck crashed into three motorbikes before overturning into a row of houses along the road. Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, 53, who was standing in front of her home selling groceries, was struck and killed. The crash scene spanned more than 20 metres, strewn with debris from motorcycles and the damaged truck.
Le Thi Vuong, a local resident, said she was inside her home when she heard a loud crash. Rushing outside, she found part of her house had been destroyed. Sand from the overturned truck buried Thuy. Nearby, another woman’s leg was trapped beneath the vehicle, and two others were thrown from their motorbikes.
Four injured victims were transported to Quang Nam Central General Hospital. The hospital said that Nguyen Thi Thao, 36, suffered severe leg trauma and had one leg amputated above the knee. Her four-year-old son, Le Tan Thinh, sustained minor injuries. Tran Vinh, 52, suffered a traumatic brain injury and was transferred to Danang for further treatment. Nguyen Thi Tam, 62, sustained a femoral fracture and a torn leg muscle.
Three houses were also damaged in the incident. Authorities in Quang Ngai have cordoned off the site, removed the truck, and launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
