Vietnam will only resume regular international flights to Japan and the US while waiting for preparations for Omicron preventive measures from other markets.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) announced on December 28 that it had sent proposals to resume flights from January 1, 2022 to nine countries and had so far received agreement from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Cambodia.
However, the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant in all nine countries had affected the plan, the CAAV said.
According to regulations from the Vietnamese government, passengers have to take Covid-19 tests using a quick testing method at the airports before boarding the flights to Vietnam. At present, only airports in Japan and the US are providing this service.
Therefore, Vietnam can only conduct flights to the US and Japan with the first flights to Japan to be operated from January 5, 2022.
Regarding a new regulation announced by Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to quarantine all passengers arriving in the cities from Omicron-hit countries regardless of their full vaccination or recovery status, CAAV said that this regulation did not conform to the regulation issued by the Ministry of Health. Therefore they need to discuss the issue with the two city authorities.
"Hanoi and HCM City's regulations are affecting our plan to resume international flights," CAAV said.
Vietnam on Tuesday reported the first Covid-19 Omicron infection who was a person arriving from the UK.
