Ho Chi Minh City metro line posts strong first year profit

Ho Chi Minh City’s first metro line has reported a strong profit in its first year of commercial operations, allowing the operator to eliminate accumulated losses from earlier investment phases.

Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway 1 Company, also known as HURC, reported 2025 revenue of VND 547 billion (approximately USD 21 million), nearly 50 times higher than the previous year.

The figure translates to average daily revenue of almost VND 1.5 billion (approximately USD 57,700).

More than half of the company’s revenue came from government subsidies, while ticket sales generated VND 214 billion (approximately USD 8.2 million). The remaining income came from infrastructure operations and traffic coordination services.

After deducting costs, HURC posted an after tax profit of nearly VND 39 billion (approximately USD 1.5 million), reversing a loss of more than VND 10 billion (approximately USD 385,000) recorded in 2024.

The result significantly exceeded the company’s modest profit target of VND 20 million (approximately USD 770) and enabled it to fully clear outstanding losses accumulated during the project preparation stage.

HURC directly manages, operates and maintains Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien Metro Line, officially known as Metro Line 1.

The 20-kilometre railway, featuring 14 stations, officially entered commercial service in late 2024. In addition to train and station operations, the company oversees the electronic ticketing system, metro mobile application, customer services and commercial connections around stations.

Current fares on the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro range from VND 6,000 to VND 20,000 depending on travel distance and payment method.

Passengers can purchase a one day pass for VND 40,000 or a three day pass for VND 90,000, both allowing unlimited journeys during the validity period.

Monthly passes cost VND 300,000 for standard passengers, while school and university students receive a discounted rate of VND 150,000 with unlimited travel included.
