Northern Vietnam braces for deep freeze

Over the past 24 hours, a strong cold air mass from the north has continued moving southward and is expected to bring a deep freeze to northern Vietnam from the night of November 17.

Aaccording to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, starting November 17, the cold air will affect the northeast and north central regions, later spreading to the northwest and central central regions.

On land, northeast winds will reach levels 3-4 (about 12-28 km/h), with coastal areas at levels 4-5 (about 29-38 km/h). On land, northeast winds will reach levels 3-4, with coastal areas at levels 4-5.

From November 17-18, northern Vietnam will see rain and showers, with thunderstorms in some areas. From the night of November 17, northern and north central Vietnam will experience cold weather, with some highland areas experiencing severe cold.

Minimum temperatures are forecast at 12-15°C in northern and north-central Vietnam, falling below 10°C in highland areas. In Hanoi, rain and showers are expected, with cold weather from the night of November 17 and minimum temperatures of 13-15°C.

The cold air, combined with upper-level easterly disturbances, will bring heavy rain from Ha Tinh to Khanh Hoa provinces. Heavy rainfall may cause flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides in hilly areas, and rapid inundation in urban and industrial areas.

The deep freeze may significantly impact livestock, posing risks to cattle and poultry if not properly sheltered and warmed, and affect crop growth, especially in mountainous areas. Strong winds and high waves will threaten maritime activities, while flooding and localized landslides may disrupt transportation and infrastructure.
