The people gathered to block vehicles on National Highway 1A
According to the police, 500 people gathered to block vehicles on National Highway 1A at Pho Thanh Commune, Duc Pho District on the evening of September 2.
The move followed the rumour that Sa Huynh Waste Treatment Plant, which had been suspended for environmental concerns, was resuming operations. They laid down on the road and threw bricks and stones at the police, injuring some policemen. Some blocked the road with obstacles like empty coffins.
The situation eased in the early morning of September 3 ad nine people were detained and dozens of others fined.
Over the past month, people in Pho Thanh Commune established camps around the Sa Huynh waste treatment plant to protest against its operation, urging for it to be relocated due to its environmental pollution.
Following intense opposition, provincial authorities late last month agreed to inspect the plant's construction.
