On September 4, Room to Read (RtR), a non-government organisation working on improving the quality of education for disadvantaged children, inaugurated libraries at nine primary schools in Yen Son District, Tuyen Quang Province.
This is the first year RtR has implemented a library programme in northern Vietnam, marking a step forward in the development of a new educational environment for primary pupils.
The RtR library programme aims to help primary schools set up and manage libraries, making them user friendly for pupils so that they can develop good reading habits and skills.
RtR has so far in 2011 donated 24,000 books to 20 Vietnamese schools serving approximately 8,000 pupils.
Established in 2000, RtR has operations in 10 Asian and African nations.
During its ten years in Vietnam, the organisation has helped build 120 schools, set up 467 libraries, published 39 book titles, and distributed more than 265,000 books.
