NBA to offer players new proposal

The NBA plans to submit a revised proposal for a new collective contract to players within the next fortnight, commissioner David Stern, pictured here in 2010, said Friday.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires on June 30, and the league and players are not close to a new deal.

The lack of progress has sparked talk of a work stoppage affecting next season, which NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver admitted is "beginning to have an impact on our business."

The labor situation was a key topic during two days of NBA owners\' meetings that concluded on Friday.

Also under discussion was the desire of Sacramento Kings owners Gavin and Joe Maloof to move the team to Anaheim.

Stern said the league had granted the Maloof brothers an extension until May 2 to file paperwork requesting the move.

As for contract talks, Stern said the league would submit its latest proposal to the players soon, and once it had the negotiating committee would try to set up a meeting with players\' representatives.

Owners are seeking significant changes to the contract, saying they face projected losses of about $300 million this season.

The players have questioned whether the league is losing that much money and have opposed a hard salary cap, pay cuts and non-guaranteed contracts.

The last NBA lockout shortened the 1998-99 season by 32 games to just 50.

It also wiped out the 1999 NBA all-star game and kept NBA players from participating in the 1998 world championships on the American team.
