In the Mekong Delta region, 10.3 million people have now reached working age, but almost 86% of them lack marketable skills.

The People’s Committee of Can Tho City, Tuoi Tre newspaper and Tay Do University recently held a joint conference about human resource development in the region. The event attracted 100 participants, including many experts from universities.
Dr. Tran Thanh Man, Chairman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, said the Mekong Delta region has 18 million, including 10.3 million of working age. However, many of them remain unskilled.
The provinces of Dong Thap, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang have the highest rate of untrained labourers, with over 90%, compared to the country’s average of 74.6%.
Dr. Dang Danh Loi from Ho Chi Minh City People Security University said, in the Mekong Delta, around 45% of rural residents over the age of 15 have not completed any mentionable level of education. Only about 33% complete primary education, while just under 14% finish secondary education, and less than 6% have achieved any higher education.
The region has 11 universities, 27 colleges and 35 vocational training schools. But the education system is not in keeping with real needs of the area. Only 10% specalise in agro-forestry and fishery, and just 5% in medicine.
This year, the region is expected to provide jobs for 150,000 people in rural and mountainous areas.
