His parents and neighbors also confirmed that the man posing with two monkey carcasses in a photo that has recently shocked the online community is Quang.

Also the same day, Phan Tuan, chief of the provincial department of forest management, told Tuoi Tre that the slaying is believed to occur in Sa Thay District in the central highlands province of Kon Tum.

Earlier, on Monday, a series of photos appeared on Facebook showed a group of young men brutally torturing two primates before eviscerating and barbecuing them.

They even bound the limbs of a pregnant monkey and forced it to smoke before posing eagerly with the carcasses.

Within hours of the Internet posting, animal rights advocates and others criticized the men and called them inhuman in more than 1,000 comments.

The monkeys are douc langurs (Pygathrix), which are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book of endangered and threatened species, according to Professor Vo Quy at the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental at the National University of Hanoi.
