Malaysia has detained a Vietnamese fishing boat with 42 fishermen on board after they were accused of fishing illegally in its waters.

The fishermen is from boat QNa 95005 TS owned by Tran Van Manh from the central province of Quang Nam’s Thang Binh District.

According to Pham Viet Tich, director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the fishing boat was detained by Malaysian maritime authorities on June 11.

Quang Nam People’s Committee have asked local agencies to keep a close watch on the case and co-operate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia to support the fishermen.

Quang Nam Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have been urged to work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Directorate of Fisheries to define the area where the fishing boat operated and was detained to know exactly whether it was illegally operating in Malaysian waters.

The department reported that two Quang Nam fishing boats have been caught illegally operating in foreign waters, including one detained by Thailand maritime authorities in March last year.
