Ice blankets Fansipan peak on Christmas Day

A thick layer of ice covered the summit of Fansipan in Lao Cai Province on Christmas Day as temperatures fell to near freezing.

From the early hours of December 25, ice began forming around the peak in Sapa ward when temperatures dropped to between 0 and 2 degrees Celsius. By 6 am, thick ice coated walkways, rocky roofs and the flagpole area, marking the heaviest frost recorded there since the start of winter.

The icy scene delighted many visitors. By 7 am, skies had cleared and sunshine caused the ice to gradually melt.

“It was really lucky to witness ice on Fansipan today. This is the second time I have experienced such a special moment,” said Van Duc, a tourist at the site.
