Hundreds of houses in the northern mountainous province of Son La’s Moc Chau District have been damaged by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake on Monday.

The earthquake which occurred at around 12:15 pm caused many houses and headquarters of agencies to subside. In the communes of Na Muong, Ta Lai and Long Sap, headquarters of the people’s committee saw cracks with mortar peeled from walls and ceilings and an electrical fire.

Meanwhile, 127 houses and many local agencies in the districts of Moc Chau and Yen Chau districts experienced the same situation.

Authorities of Moc Chau instructed communes to check affected households to ensure safety.

Hanoi residents panicked as high-rise buildings felt the earthquake.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked localities to deal with the consequences of the earthquake quickly to help stabilise people’s life, particularly the ethnic minority groups. It is essential to inspect dykes and reservoirs to timely detect risks for solutions.

The Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Public Security have arranged their rescue force in necessary cases.

The Institute of Geophysics will provide up-to-date information on the earthquake to the public.
