A young man in the central city of Hoi An has run over 30 kilometres to ask for his girlfriend's hand at her house in the neighbouring city of Danang.

Tran Ngoc Linh, 32, and his girlfriend, Huynh Thi Tuyet Chau, both love marathon and have participated in many running competitions together. Linh decided to make his proposal in a special way.

"We first met each other in 2014 at a local marathon club and our love has developed [because] we share a special love for marathon," Linh said. "So I decided to run from my home to her to ask for her [hand in] marriage."

The young man said that as a marathoner and pacer, the 30-kilometre road was not a problem to him. A group of his friends joined to support him.

With a small bunch of flowers in his hand, Linh and his friends started from Linh's house in Cam Kim Commune, then ran through the Bridge Pagoda and along a sea-side road to Chau's house in Danang.

Despite facing heavy rains on the way, Linh kept his pace and arrived at his girlfriend's house in just over 3 hours.

"I was wet through but I got a "yes" from my girlfriend," he said. "We were both very moved and happy and have received great congratulations and support from our families and friends. This was the most memorable race in my life."

The couple are planning to get married at the end of December.
