Heavy rains hit northern Vietnam after extreme heat

Northern Vietnam is bracing for widespread heavy rain from August 4 to 7 following a period of intense heat.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the midland and mountainous areas are expected to receive 50 to 120 mm of rainfall, with some places likely to exceed 250 mm. Other areas in the north may see 30 to 80 mm of rain, with localised totals surpassing 150 mm. Rainfall intensity may exceed 100 mm within three hours.

The weather agency warned of possible thunderstorms, lightning, whirlwinds, and hail during the downpours. Prolonged rainfall could lead to flash floods, flooding, and landslides, especially in vulnerable mountainous regions.

At the same time, central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Danang, and eastern areas of Quang Ngai to Khanh Hoa, are forecast to continue experiencing extreme heat over the coming days.

On August 3, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued a directive urging northern localities to prepare for the potential impacts of heavy rain, including flash floods and landslides.

In recent days, the northern mountainous provinces, particularly Dien Bien and Son La, have already been battered by severe weather, triggering landslides and flash floods.
