Many areas in Lao Cai Province is flooded following heavy downpours on September 9.

The downpour, which began at 7 am, caused water levels in Cam Duong Ward, Lao Cai City, to rise by 30 to 70 centimetres, severely disrupting traffic, particularly for motorbikes and pedestrians.

Local police deployed officers to regulate traffic and guide residents through flooded areas while working with other agencies to clear blocked drainage systems.

In Tuyen Quang’s Na Hang District, the rain triggered a flash flood in Thang Tin Commune. An estimated 200 cubic metres of mud and rocks swept into the premises of Thang Tin Semi-boarding School for Ethnic Minority Students, destroying a community house, eroding four embankments, and damaging access roads, dormitories, and toilets. Floodwater inundated student housing, washing away bedding, clothes, and school supplies.

Teachers and local authorities evacuated all 301 students to safety.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that under the influence of Typhoon Tapah, northern mountainous and midland provinces will continue to face heavy rain from September 9 to 10, with rainfall of 50 to 120 millimetres, and in some places exceeding 250 millimetres.
