The “Da Lat fairy guava”, priced at VND35,000-40,000 (USD1.66-1.9) per kilogramme is heavily processed with various chemicals.

According to locals, the guavas have been available for sale in Da Lat City for many years. To make the product, sellers only need to select big guavas, and peel and soak them into saccharine. After that, they are dyed with a blue chemical for a day prior to sale.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, in HCM City’s District 7, complained that she bought one kilo of the guava at Da Lat Market. After coming home, she put them into a bucket of clean water and found that the water turned blue in just a few minutes.

Bui Van Do, Head of the Lam Dong Province’s Department of Food Safety and Hygiene, said the department would take guava samples. If toxic chemicals were discovered the public would be informed via the mass media and sellers would also be strictly punished.
