HCM City power consumption hits new record amid heatwave

Electricity consumption in HCM City has reached a new record as prolonged hot and humid weather continues to drive up demand despite the start of the rainy season.

According to HCM City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC), the city consumed nearly 195.1 million kWh of electricity on May 12, surpassing previous peaks recorded in April and marking a 9.1 per cent increase over the highest daily consumption level in 2025.

Weekly power consumption from May 4 to May 10 also hit a record 1.282 billion kWh with demand forecast to rise further this week to around 1.3 billion kWh.

Weather forecasters said temperatures were expected to ease slightly later this month as seasonal rains increase, though hot spells and humid conditions would likely persist.

EVNHCMC said it had instructed member units to strengthen inspections and prepare rapid-response plans for potential power disruptions caused by early-season storms, including falling trees and flying debris damaging the grid.

The utility also said priority would be given to ensuring stable power supplies for hospitals, data centres, industrial parks and schools during upcoming examination periods.

Residents were urged to use electricity safely and efficiently to help reduce household expenses and support the city’s energy security.
