Joyous reunion

On the  morning of January 13, police in District 7 confirmed that they arrested the suspect and retrieved the baby, whose parents are Nguyen Thi Minh Tam and Truong Van Hen, of Phu My Ward.

The hospital gave the boy a medical check-up before handing him over to his parents.

In the early morning, local police received a call from a woman giving herself up to police by the suspect. The call was then located in the surrounding of Binh Dien Bridge, in Binh Chanh District, where police were sent to and found the suspect with the baby.

The suspect, Vu Thi Bich Tram, 25, is from the southern province of Long An.

According to her first statements, she kidnapped the baby in order to keep her husband.

She said she suffered a miscarriage a short time after her marriage. Being afraid that her husband may abandon her, Tram said she kidnapped the baby, Truong Van Hoai, and claimed it was hers in order to call for attention by her husband.

However, an investigator from District 7 police said this was just an initial statement that there needs to be further investigated.

On the morning of January 9, Tram allegedly kidnapped the one-day old from the hospital while the baby’s mother was in the bathroom.

Based on statements by the baby’s mother and witnesses, local police made a composite sketch of the suspect and disbursed it throughout the city.

District 7 People’s Committee granted local police VND5 million (USD236.57) and the hospital’s leaders VND7 million (USD331.2) for their efforts during the investigation.
