Nearly 100 people were arrested for gambling on cockfights in Ho Chi Minh City.

Gamblers caught red-handed

A police raid on September 9 resulted in the arrest of 99 people who were caught in the act of wagering on cockfights in Binh Tan District.

Police confiscated over VND420 million (USD21,000), USD1,300, 79 mobile handsets, 86 motorbikes, and 10 fighting cocks.

According to the police, the ring was headed by 31-year-old Chuong Hoang Chien and had been operating since mid 2009.

As the ring grew in bigger scale, Chien allegedly invited others to help him. This cockpit would usually operate in the afternoons, with about 15 fights a day.

Police say that there were also other types of gambling held there, some of the them involving hundreds of millions of VND per bet and several hundred people each day.

The case is still under investigation. Although cockfighting itself is not illegal in Vietnam, gambling is.
