HCM City is installing hundreds of metres of covered walkways and modern bus shelters linking bus stops with metro stations, making transfers easier and protecting passengers from sun and rain.

The city is installing modern bus shelters and covered walkways connecting bus stops with metro stations as part of efforts to improve public transport and encourage greater use of the network.

At the underground Ben Thanh Station, a covered walkway stretching about 300 metres has been installed in September 23 Park.

The walkway leads passengers from the station to bus stops and exits onto Pham Ngu Lao and Le Lai streets.

Its zigzag design creates a continuous pedestrian corridor, making transfers easier and safer.

About three metres high, the structure has a powder-coated steel frame and insulated roofing, with green as the dominant colour to blend with the surrounding urban landscape.

A new bus shelter, about 12 metres long, has also been installed on the pavement along Pham Ngu Lao Street. Featuring a glass rear wall and enclosed design, it provides a more comfortable waiting area and complements the covered walkway.

The shelter is equipped with security cameras, route information screens and USB and Type-C charging ports.

Ngo Duc Anh, 20, a student who regularly uses the metro, said the covered walkway made transfers between the metro and buses much easier, particularly during heavy rain or hot weather.

Thao Dien was the first of the 14 stations on Metro Line 1, which runs between Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien, to have its covered walkway system completed, more than a month ago.

Two covered sections, measuring about 20 metres and more than 100 metres, have been installed along the pedestrian walkway on Quoc Huong Street, connecting bus stops with the entrance to Thao Dien Station.

The new bus shelter at Thao Dien is equipped with an LCD route information screen, LED lighting, illuminated signage and security cameras.

The arched covered walkway is about three metres high, with colours matching the station's architecture to create a modern, integrated design.

Similar bus shelters and covered walkways are also being added at other Metro Line 1 stations, including An Phu, Rach Chiec, Thu Duc and National University.

The work is part of HCM City's efforts to improve public transport, particularly connections to Metro Line 1.

he new bus shelters feature modern lighting systems, giving public transport facilities in central HCM City a more modern appearance. The city is currently offering free travel on 134 bus routes to encourage public transport use and aims to expand its urban rail network to 255 kilometres by 2030.
