HCM City children's hospital sees surge in measles

Children's Hospital 1 in HCM City has seen a sharp rise in the number of patients affected with measles over the recent days.

Children's Hospital 1 in HCM City has seen a sharp rise in the number of patients affected with measles over the recent days.

Doctor Du Tuan Quy, head of Children's Hospital 1's Department of Infectious Diseases-Neurology, said the department currently receives around 52 measles patients per week, compared to 20-25 cases earlier.

Among those, eight have suffered from severe complications, including pneumonia.

Only one of the measles patients staying at the Department of Infectious Diseases-Neurology has been vaccinated against the disease; meanwhile, the remainder have not yet been provided with the vaccine for various reasons.

Quy emphasised that the current measles outbreak is not to be taken lightly, as it often occurs in cycles of 4-5 years. The most recent outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City was in 2019, and the city is now grappling with another potentially severe outbreak.

Quy underlined that vaccination was the most effective and crucial measure for disease prevention.

Hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City have reported three measles-related deaths.
