Nha Trang tightens controls on tourist motorbike rentals

Authorities in Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa Province, have ordered tighter management of tourist motorbike rental services following a series of traffic accidents involving foreign riders.

The Nha Trang Ward People’s Committee on May 8 instructed local agencies and businesses to strengthen oversight of motorbike rental activities.

Local police have been tasked with inspecting rental operators and strictly handling violations related to business conditions, driving licences, insurance and vehicle safety.

Authorities said inspections would be stepped up and rental businesses strictly penalised for providing motorbikes to tourists, including foreign visitors, without valid driving licences or legal driving eligibility.

The ward’s economic and urban management division has also been tasked with reviewing rental operators for compliance with registration and contract rules, while community groups step up awareness campaigns on traffic regulations.

Rental businesses are being urged not to lease vehicles to people without driving licences or those under the influence of alcohol.

Residents have also been encouraged to report violations to local authorities.

The rapid growth of motorbike rental services in recent years has supported tourism and local economic activity, but weak oversight could pose traffic safety risks and damage the city’s tourism image.

Rental operators have been instructed to comply fully with legal requirements, including verifying customers’ driving eligibility, maintaining insurance and vehicle inspections, and meeting fire safety standards.

They are also required to provide clear agreements with customers and instruct tourists, particularly foreign visitors, on Vietnamese traffic laws, drink-driving regulations and road safety rules.
