The project, with total state budget funding of VND 17,230 billion (approximately USD 679 million), is managed by the HCM City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board.

The goal is to build protective embankments, dredge the canal bed, and install a comprehensive drainage system for wastewater and rainwater. The project also includes the construction of dual carriageways along both sides of the canal, as well as green spaces, public parks, and a lighting system.

As one of the city’s key infrastructure projects, the Xuyen Tam Canal redevelopment is expected to significantly reduce environmental pollution and flooding while transforming the urban landscape. The project has been highly anticipated by local residents for the past 20 years.

The canal system spans nearly 9 kilometers in total, including a 6.6-kilometer main route from the Nhieu Loc–Thi Nghe Canal to the Vam Thuat River, and three branches — Cau Son, Binh Loi, and Binh Trieu — covering over 2.2 kilometers.

According to Dau An Phuc, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, the Xuyen Tam Canal project not only improves the environment and mitigates flooding by channeling wastewater to treatment plants but also creates a new transportation axis, contributing to urban renewal and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
