Hanoi proposes emergency water pipeline

Hanoi has asked the PM to give the go-ahead for construction of an emergency water pipeline as the city continues to suffer from water supply problems caused by poor quality workmanship.

Hanoi’s municipal authorities have asked the prime minister to give the go-ahead for construction of an emergency water pipeline as the city continues to suffer from water supply problems caused by poor quality workmanship.

Hanoi's water pipeline broken multiple times

Hanoi's water pipeline went into operation six years ago, but have broken an incredible 15 times because of shoddy construction by Vinaconex subsidiary, Vinaconex Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester Pipe Company. Up to 70,000 homes and numerous public facilities such as hospitals are regular affected by the increasingly common breaks.

The city already has plans to construct a second pipeline which aims to provide 600,000 cubic metres of water per day by 2020. However, construction of the second pipeline has not even started and the completion date is unclear while the current pipeline continues breaking.

To deal with the problem, the city's authorities plan to build a 70,000 cubic metre per day capacity line from Highway 21 to Ring Road 3. Because this is an emergency line, the authorities have asked for a fast-track procedure that would avoid long-winded planning permission and surveying.

When the second main pipeline completed, this emergency line would be used to provide water to households living along Highway 21.

The emergency pipeline would cost VND864 billion (USD41.1 million) and be funded by the city's development fund.
