The initiative is part of National Traffic Safety month, which is from August 31 to September 30.

About 100 drunk drivers have been detected and punished so far, according to statistics from the municipal traffic police bureau.

Traffic officers have began to use breath-test machines to monitor the alcohol content of drivers.

The new programme began on the evening of September 6. Police started random checks on drivers on Tang Bat Ho and Tran Khanh Du Streets - the area well known for its bia hoi drinking establishments, and detected several drunk drivers who were all fined.

According to regulations, if alcohol level of a motorbike driver is 0.25-0.4mg per litre of breath, the driver will be fined anywhere between VND300,000 to VND400,000 (USD14.43-USD19.23). For car drivers, the fine would be VND1 million to VND1.4 million (USD48-USD67.3).

In case, the level surpasses 0.4mg per litre of breath, motorbike drivers will have to pay VND500,000-VND1,000,000 (USD24-USD48) and car drivers would have to pay between VND5 million and VND10 million (USD240.38-USD480.76).

Recently, Danang has also began tests for drunk drivers.
