Hanoi confirms record high number of daily Covid-19 infections

An additional 16,948 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Sunday and Hanoi continued to record the highest number with over 2,000 cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

According to the ministry's report, 16,914 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in all 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,045), Hai Phong (1,804), Vinh Long (1,280), Tay Ninh (946), and Binh Phuoc (782). There were 34 imported patients confirmed today. Vietnam has so far confirmed 20 Omicron-infected cases.

The new infections showed an increase of 2,092 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 11,948 infections found in the community.

As of Sunday evening, 1,757,254 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (504,197), Binh Duong (290,921), Dong Nai (98,060), Tay Ninh (77,002), and Hanoi (49,631).

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 1,763,040. The country now stands 31st among 223 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.

On January 2, an additional 14,420 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,372,696.

On Sunday evening, a further 221 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 32,831. The deaths were reported in some localities including HCM City (30), Dong Nai (41), An Giang (17), Vinh Long (16), Dong Thap (15), Can Tho (15), Tien Giang (11), Hau Giang (9), Tay Ninh (8 ), Hanoi (8 ), Soc Trang (7), Binh Duong (7), Kien Giang (7), Ba Ria - Vung Tau (6), Khanh Hoa (5), Bac Lieu (4), Binh Thuan (3), Ca Mau (3), Nam Dinh (2), Tra Vinh (2), Nghe An (1), Dak Lak (1), Ha Giang (1), Gia Lai (1), and Long An (1).

Vietnam on January 1 administered 592,352 doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 152.81 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 69.06 million people having received two doses.
