A landslide area in Coc Pai Town
According to a report from local authorities, there are currently 16 landslide areas in Coc Pai, with lengths of 350-500 metres, widths of 150-200 metres, and depths of 12-18 metres.
"Recent inspections show that around 58 percent of the town area face high risks of landslides, 26 percent face medium risks, while only 16 percent are safe. Over 1,000 buildings and nearly 4,000 residents are in the high-risk area, spanning 2.39 square kilometres.
Addressing a meeting held on February 12 on the evacuation, the Secretary of Ha Giang Provincial Party Committee, Hau A Lenh, agreed to urgently evacuate all residents living in areas facing high risks of landslides, and the evacuation should be completed before the rainy season.
"We'll need to discuss with residents about the issues as soon as possible," the official stressed. "In the long term, we may move the whole town to a new location."
At the meeting, Xin Man District authorities proposed removing 44 households in Na Pan Village first; the work will be continued with others soon.
The Ha Giang Secretary has asked Xin Man District to co-operate with concerned departments, agencies, and experts to find a proper location for Coc Pai Town, the district's administrative centre, as soon as possible and submit the plan to the government for approval.
