The management board of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park said on September 6 that it had received a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) from authorities in Quang Trach Commune for rescue and rehabilitation.
The animal was first spotted by Vo Minh Tam, a resident of Xuan Kieu Village in Quang Trach Commune, Quang Tri Province, after it strayed into a residential area.
According to local authorities, the macaque entered homes, damaged household items and preyed on domestic poultry, raising concerns about public safety and property damage.
To prevent further incidents, Tam alerted the head of Xuan Kieu Village and worked with local residents to safely capture the animal. Afterward, he reported the case to the Quang Trach Commune People's Committee.
The commune authorities took custody of the macaque and carried out the required public notification procedures to identify any lawful owner or caretaker.
After the statutory notification period expired, no owner or legal custodian was identified. Authorities also confirmed that the animal was not connected to any legal violation or criminal case.
The macaque was subsequently transferred to the management board of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park for professional care.
Veterinarians conducted an initial health assessment upon receiving the animal and identified it as a healthy adult male weighing approximately 6kg.
The rescue centre has placed the macaque in quarantine for observation and care in accordance with established wildlife-management procedures. Specialists will work to restore its physical condition and natural behaviours before considering its release back into the wild.
According to the national park authorities, the rhesus macaque is classified as a Group IIB species under regulations issued by Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment governing the management of endangered, rare and protected wildlife species and the implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
