Can Tho Police said on September 4 that local authorities had received a long-tailed macaque from a resident who voluntarily surrendered the animal after discovering it on private property.
The macaque was found searching for food in the garden of a household in Thanh Xuan Commune.
Recognising that the animal was a wild species, the resident informed Thanh Xuan Commune Police and coordinated with authorities to hand it over for proper care and management.

After receiving the report, officials inspected the animal and determined that it weighed around 2kg and appeared to be in good health.
Authorities identified the macaque as a long-tailed macaque listed under Group IIB of Government Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP, which regulates the management and protection of endangered, precious and rare forest plants and wildlife.
The relevant agencies completed the necessary procedures to take custody of the animal in accordance with regulations.
Wildlife specialists will assess appropriate measures for its care and rescue before considering its release back into the wild once conditions permit.
Thanh Xuan Commune Police urged residents who encounter wild animals in residential areas, orchards, farmland or other locations to maintain a safe distance, avoid attempting to capture them, and promptly notify local authorities for guidance and proper handling.
