A student in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai has died of diphtheria, causing more than 100 others to be quarantined as part of disease prevention.

According to the provincial Department of Health, the victim was a 14-year-old student from Dak Ta Ley Primary and Secondary School in Mang Yang District.

He had a cough and fever and was taken to Mang Yang District’s Health Centre and then Gia Lai Paediatrics Hospital and died on September 25.

Following the death, the provincial Department of Health instructed to zone vulnerable areas in Dak Ta Ley Commune for sterilisation and provided medical checks-up for local residents.

According to Do Ngoc Minh, headmaster of Dak Ta Ley Primary and Secondary School, around 100 students of the school have been put under quarantine after the fatality.

The department reported that in the first nine months of this year, Chu Pah recorded five diphtheria cases.

So far this year, Gia Lai has reported a total of 41 diphtheria cases, of which two have died and 38 have been cured and discharged from hospital.

In July, the Ministry of Health carried out a vaccination campaign against diphtheria, which, at its initial stage, will give some 10 million doses of vaccines to 4.7 million people in four central highlands provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum.
