The incident occurred on the evening of March 18 on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street in Mui Ne Ward, when the suspect, riding a motorbike, was involved in a collision with a car.
An argument reportedly broke out, prompting local police to respond.
While officers were handling the situation, the suspect allegedly attacked Major Pham Nguyen Duc Lam, head of the local police unit, with a weapon.
After the assault, the suspect fled the scene on a motorbike. The officer sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
Police launched a manhunt the same night and tracked the suspect’s movements. He was arrested early on March 19 in Tan Minh Commune, more than 70km from the scene.
Authorities are continuing their investigation.
