First study on cancer treatment expenses conducted in Vietnam

A study on the expense of cancer treatment, the first of its kind in Vietnam, is being implemented, involving on 1,500 patients.

The study will cover around 1,500 cancer patients in Vietnam

The study began in September of this year and will be completed in October 2013. The patients involved in the study have been receiving treatment at K Hospital and Bach Mai hospitals in Hanoi, as well as the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital.

It is part of a more general study named “Expenses in cancer treatment in Southeast Asia”, being carried out on 10,000 patients in seven ASEAN Country by George Institute for Global Health in Sydney.

The survey includes expenses for diagnosis and treatment, time as well as effort of living standards of patients, relatives, living standards and bad impacts from patients' work.

Professor and Dr. Truong Viet Dung, Chairman of Evaluation Board for Ethical Issues in Biomedical Research under the Ministry of Health said, the study will help to provide information useful to managers in the the health sector for the development of a strategy for cancer treatment in Vietnam and other ASEAN countries.

According to K Hospital, around 75,000 people in Vietnam die of cancer annually.  By the end of 2020, the country is expected to witness at least 189,344 new cancer patients.
