Firm fined for polluting Thua Thien-Hue coastal waters

A firm in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has just been fined for illegally discharging wastewater which had polluted coastal waters.

The illegal discharge has caused the seawater to turn red since October.

The Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People's Committee announced on December 3 that it had fined the MTV Hao Hung Hue Company, based in Phu Loc District, VND532 million for discharging wastewater containing chemicals exceeding the permitted level.

According to a report from the local authorities, during the operation of Station 3 at Chan May Port, the company discharged between 400-600 cubic metres of wastewater every 24 hours, which contained Coliform 48 times higher than the permitted level, colour exceeding 2.46 times, and TSS 1.94 times higher than the approved safe level.

Their illegal discharge has caused the seawater to turn red since October.

Following complaints from local people and the media, the Thua Thien-Hue Department of Natural Resources and Environment collected water samples.

Following their investigations, it proposed a fine to the MTV Hao Hung Hue Company.
