European emission standards to be applied from 2017

New motor vehicle emission standards have been set by the Government in an effort to mitigate air pollution caused by motor vehicle emissions.

New motor vehicle emission standards have been set by the Government in an effort to mitigate air pollution caused by motor vehicle emissions.

Under the new guidelines, motorcycles manufactured, assembled or newly imported will be required to comply with type 3 emission standards beginning January 1, 2017.

Automobiles will be compelled to achieve type 4 emission standards with further tightening of the rules on January 1, 2022 when they will be required to comply with type 5 emission standards.

These emission standards are similar to those imposed by the European Union.

Estimates indicate that there are currently about 1.2 to 1.3 million automobiles and 33 million motorbikes in Vietnam.

Experts have said that the leading cause of air pollution in Vietnam was from means of transport, particularly engine-run vehicles, which led to the need for strict limits on gas emissions.
