Residents in major Vietnamese cities are increasingly turning to electric motorbikes, driven by cost savings and environmental concerns.

Dang Hai My in Bo De Ward, Hanoi said her family is considering buying an electric motorbike after receiving a 30 per cent subsidy from the company to switch from petrol vehicles. “It is a good level of support and comes at the right time, so we are more determined to make the change,” she said.

Luoc Thi Thao in Cau Giay Ward said electric motorbikes are significantly more economical, especially as petrol prices have risen steadily in recent months.

Retailers and distributors across Vietnam have reported a sharp increase in demand. Duong Quang Duc, manager of a Viet Thanh electric motorbike shop, said customer numbers had doubled or tripled over the past month compared with both the previous month and the same period in 2025.

In response, many dealers are reducing petrol motorbike inventories and expanding their range of electric models to meet shifting consumer preferences.

Manufacturers have also improved technology and safety features. Many newer models now include built-in navigation and mapping systems, while removable batteries allow users to charge at home, addressing infrastructure challenges in apartment buildings.

Do Van Dat, a sales representative at Vinfast Thu Anh 2 shop in Hanoi said the store receives between 100 and 150 customers daily, with some popular models selling out.

He added that mid-range models priced at around VND 20 million to VND 30 million are the most popular. These models often offer battery swapping at charging stations or home charging options, providing greater convenience and lower operating costs than petrol vehicles.

With policy support from the government and businesses, alongside ongoing technological improvements, electric motorbikes are expected to expand their market share and become a mainstream choice for Vietnamese consumers in the coming years.
