Danang authorities announced on May 17 that they were taking samples for Covid-19 tests for a group of 160 people. Meanwhile, the police in Ngu Hanh Son District are investigating the case.

According to the group, each person paid USD10,000 for a trip to South Korea.

On May 16, the owner of Toan Thang Hotel on Nguyen Van Thoai Street reported to the police about a group of people who had stayed in his hotel since May 11 after noticing suspicious activities.

The group members come from various provinces and cities including Hanoi, HCM City, Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Tay Ninh and Bac Giang provinces. They were guided by two men named Cuong and Tuan from Hanoi. The group gathered and travelled to Danang in preparation for a trip to South Korea.

Some people said they were on a tour trip while others said they were promised work in South Korea. The group were supposed to travel to South Korea by ship.

Each member already paid USD217 in Hanoi and another USD300 in Danang. However, on May 15, the two guides suddenly left the hotel and ran away. The group will temporarily stay at the hotel for verification of their stories. According to the police, there are signs of fraud.

Party Secretary of Danang City Nguyen Van Quang said, "The criminals help people cross borders into Vietnam illegally for money and they also gather people and illegally bring them to other countries for money. It's clear that this is a fraud but we are still unsure how they managed to convince so many people that they could travel overseas."
