Bac Yen District People's Committee announced on Sunday evening that they had relocated 12 households in Ta Xua Commune who lived in vulnerable areas to ensure their safety.
"These families have moved to live with their relatives or in public buildings as more landslides may occur in their locations," the committee said. "We've also asked local homestay owners to stop serving customers during this period."
The move came after a deadly landslide occurred at the Mando homestay facility on August 10 in the commune.
The landslide occurred around 4 am when a mountain over 100 metres above Provincial Road 112 began to erode and cascade down, burying the tourist homestay. The owner of the homestay was killed, while her husband and child were injured. Luckily, there were no guests at the facility at that time.
The landslide also blocked the road surface and caused extensive damage to another nearby homestay.
Son La and several surrounding provinces have experienced torrential heavy rains over the past weeks, which have triggered landslides in several areas.
