Dong Nai launches 220-tonne fresh banana export

Dong Nai authorities held a ceremony on April 2 to mark the export of 220 tonnes of fresh bananas and promote the province’s agricultural exports in 2026.

Seven export companies took part in the shipment, sending 11 containers, equivalent to about 220 tonnes of Cavendish bananas, to markets including Japan, South Korea and China.

Dong Nai currently has 20,974 hectares of banana plantations, producing more than 900,000 tonnes annually, with an average yield of around 55 tonnes per hectare. About 80 per cent of output is for export.

Bananas are cultivated in concentrated areas such as Bau Ham, Gia Kiem, Thanh Son and Phu Vinh, and are primarily exported to China, South Korea, Japan and Malaysia, with China remaining the largest market.

At the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Hoang, vice chairwoman of the Dong Nai People’s Committee, said the province is not only a dynamic industrial hub but also has strong agricultural potential, with more than one million hectares of farmland and favourable natural conditions.

She noted that Dong Nai ranks among the country’s leading agricultural producers, with nearly 288,000 hectares of rubber, more than 175,000 hectares of cashew, over 20,000 hectares of banana and nearly 25,000 hectares of durian. Several products carry geographical indications, including Tan Trieu pomelo, Binh Phuoc cashew and Long Khanh rambutan.

The province has established 194 planting area codes and 52 packaging facilities for export. For bananas alone, 54 planting area codes cover 7,250 hectares, providing a solid foundation for expanding into international markets.

However, Hoang acknowledged challenges including small-scale production, limited application of processing and post-harvest preservation technology, and unstable market demand.

To address these issues, the province has prioritised high-tech and organic agriculture linked to processing industries and market development. It is also focusing on building a sustainable agricultural ecosystem, promoting green and circular economic models, accelerating digital transformation and planning concentrated production zones tied to branding and market diversification.

This marks the second time Dong Nai has held a banana export ceremony, following the first event in 2023.

The event aims to promote fresh bananas and key agricultural products from Dong Nai in international markets while strengthening connections between producers and export businesses.
