After P’s funeral, L and the woman’s brothers and sisters searched everywhere to find her will. But they found nothing except for her assets, which are worth more than anything they could have imagined.
“The deceased woman’s relatives found a safe, which was locked, and asked us to make an official report about unlocking it and counting the assets inside,” said Le Manh Hung, head of the Binh Thanh District Bailiff Office.
The bailiff officers hired a locksmith to cut open the safe in the presence of L and P’s siblings.
“It’s the most memorable report our office has ever made,” recalled Hung.
“It took nearly a half-day to unlock the safe, and the assets inside simply stunned everyone there.”
“We then spent almost a week counting what was inside the safe: gold, gem-inlayed, and diamond jewelry stored in plastic bags, many savings books in both US dollars and Vietnam dong, worth roughly $1 million, and dozens of estate papers in HCMC and other provinces,” Hung said.
P’s relatives said the assets are worth an enormous VND1 trillion, or $48 million.
Assets sealed
Hung said after his office finished counting the assets, the adoptive daughter and T.V.Ph, representative for P’s siblings, signed an agreement that all of the jewelry and valuable papers left in the safe would continue to be sealed off in another safe, currently located at Sacombank. The safe can only be opened with consensus from both parties.
Neither L nor the Ph’s side has been able to withdraw items over the last year, as they have yet to settle the dispute, said Hung.
Tuoi Tre reporters attempted to contact Ph on June 1, but he refused to meet, saying that he was busy.
Meanwhile, no one answered the reporters when they rang the doorbell at P’s house on To Hieu Street in Tan Phu District’s Hiep Tan Ward.
Suong, one of P’s neighbors, said she was a simple woman.
“She only had some old clothes and drove an old Dream motorbike,” said Suong, adding her house was always locked.
“Her adoptive daughter always wears face mask, and is accompanied by bodyguards whenever she goes out.”
According to Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, an official of the ward people’s committee, P died of a sudden stroke.
“She was very kind to people around, and often contributed to the ward’s charitable activities,” she said.
The HCMC People’s Court has yet to receive any lawsuits from the relevant parties over the inheritance dispute, a source said.
