Lam Tien Thang from the Nung ethnic minority was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was in Grade 7. He received chemotherapy at the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in Hanoi. At that time, his mother also suffered from oesophagal cancer but she had to stop her treatment at Bach Mai Hospital to take care of him.

After an article about Thang’s condition was published on Dantri/DTiNews Newspaper, many donors provided hundreds of millions of VND.
During his time at hospital, Thang read a lot of IT books. He also studied IT on the internet by himself. He can now create websites and software on his own.
He won high prizes at the province’s IT contest for students in grades 9, 10 and 11 and the Microsoft Office Specialist competition held in Hanoi.

Hoang Minh Canh, the headmaster of Tuyen Quang High School for the Gifted, said that Thang was an energetic student who tried his best to overcome his challenges.
Thang was named among the top 30 high-school students selected for admission to FPT University.
Thang said that he was very happy when his dream to be an FPT University student came true.
