In Dong A Village, Son Linh Commune, large sections of land have been washed away, leaving deep undercuts along the riverbank.
Cracks have appeared in the foundations of several homes, some measuring 3-5 cm wide, while livestock facilities have collapsed or been damaged and abandoned.
Dinh Van Son, 45, said his family had repeatedly reinforced the land behind their home with soil, but it was washed away whenever the river rose.
His house now stands less than two metres from the riverbank, leaving the family at risk of losing their home and property.
Another resident, Dinh Banh, said he regularly monitored river levels during the rainy season and sometimes stayed awake through the night because water could rise suddenly.
When conditions become dangerous, his family moves belongings and temporarily relocates to higher ground, returning only after floodwaters recede.
Tran Dinh Vu, director of the Son Linh Commune Construction Investment Project Management Board, said erosion along the Tra Khuc River had persisted for years and was worsening.
A recent assessment found that more than two kilometres of riverbank had been affected, directly threatening nearly 50 households.
The commune has prepared food and other essential supplies and is ready to evacuate residents if conditions deteriorate.
It has also surveyed high-risk areas and proposed that provincial authorities allocate about VND 350 billion (USD 13.3 million) to urgently build erosion-control embankments along both sides of the Tra Khuc River.
The commune has also proposed a permanent resettlement area for households affected by erosion to help them stabilise their lives and livelihoods.
Son Linh plans to designate about 19 hectares, mostly existing riverside land, for future development following administrative restructuring.
However, the plan could be difficult to implement if erosion continues, making riverbank protection and redevelopment of the riverside area increasingly urgent.
