The An Luong embankment in Duy Nghia Commune faces severe erosion.

Danang has declared a disaster emergency after erosion badly damaged river and coastal defences during late-October floods. On November 13, Pham Duc An, chairman of the Danang People’s Committee, signed the decision covering severe erosion at the An Luong embankment in Duy Nghia Commune and the coastline of Hoi An Tay Ward.

An Luong embankment, part of the 2.2 kilometre Thu Bon River dyke line, was built in 2006 with a section of more than one kilometre to shield more than 500 households in Thuan An and An Luong villages.

Between October 28 and 31, heavy rain and floodwaters from upstream caused serious scouring along the entire embankment, directly threatening nearby residential areas. Authorities in Duy Nghia evacuated 64 households, comprising 234 people, to safe locations.

At the same time, the coast in Hoi An Tay Ward suffered severe erosion linked to Typhoon Fengshen. The affected stretch extends for about 3.5 kilometres. In many places the shoreline has retreated by eight to 10 metres, damaging infrastructure belonging to households, businesses, restaurants and beachfront hotels, with a risk of further losses without longer-term intervention.
