Cracks on Lam Dong hill spark landslide fears

A durian-planted hill in Lam Dong Province, about 80 metres high and covering over two hectares, has developed cracks, posing a high risk of landslides.

The deep cracks appeared on the hill in Da Huoai 3 after several days of prolonged heavy rain.

The situation endangers 10 households with 34 residents at the foot of the hill.

Dinh Huu Tinh, who lives at the foot of the subsiding hill, said it suffered a minor landslide in the 2024 rainy season, but recent heavy rain tore it apart. Fearing a collapse, residents stayed awake all night. “We know it’s dangerous, but with our homes and belongings here, we have nowhere else to go,” he added.

In several severely affected areas, soil from the hilltop has cascaded down to the foot of the slope, which is now riddled with subsidence and crow’s-foot-shaped cracks 0.5 to 1 metre deep running across multiple sections.

According to Nguyen Van Trinh, chairman of the Da Huoai 3 Commune People’s Committee, the hill faces a very high threat of collapse during torrential rain. Local authorities have arranged on-site forces to provide timely warnings and assist residents in all situations.

Local authorities have urged households to relocate for safety and will work with them to develop a plan to move out of the hazardous area.
