Vietnamese urban experts, together with local and foreign partners, have launched a contest to redesign Thong Nhat Park.
Thong Nhat Park is a rare place for relaxation in Hanoi
The contest, entitled “Thong Nhat Park: A Place for All”, is being organised by the Vietnam Urban Planning Development Association, Lac Viet Centre for Community Support and Development and the Globalization Research Centre at the University of Hawaii.
The stated goal of the contest is to redesign the park while maintaining its green, open space Hanoi\'s largest green space.
Funding for this project will come from a combination of donors, sponsors and public support.
The committee will be accepting proposals from June 20 until July 16. Five of these submissions will be selected in by July 21. Once the winning proposal is selected, detailed plans for the park\'s renovation will be drawn up between August and December.
The winning submission will receive a reward of USD4,000, and be asked to help with the details of the development plans. The two runners-up will receive prizes of USD500 each.
Proposals can be sent by any team of up to five members. They should be written in both Vietnamese and English, then submitted to Lac Viet Centre for Community Support and Development.
The committee panel will include experts from University of Hawaii, National Taiwan University, Vietnam Urban Planning Development Association, Civil Engineering University, and Thong Nhat Park management board.
University of Hawaii Professor, Dr. C. Michael Douglass said, “Thong Nhat Park is one of the few parks in the world that was designed and made by the people themselves, with their own hands. And because of this, its cultural value as a symbol of their common bond with Hanoi as a public city is enormous.”
