Northern Vietnam will experience a strengthened cold spell from November 25, bringing chilly conditions across the region and severe cold in some mountainous areas, according to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting.

Temperatures are expected to fall to between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius, with some high mountain areas dropping to below 10 degrees. In Hanoi, cold weather is forecast from November 25, with lows ranging from 13 to 15 degrees.

Meanwhile, a new storm is forecast to enter the East Sea early on November 26 and could track toward the south central and southern regions.

The centre said that on November 24, a tropical depression was active over the eastern waters of central Philippines.

At 8 am, the centre of the system recorded wind speeds of 50 to 61 kilometres per hour. It was moving west northwest at around 20 kilometres per hour and showing signs of intensifying. By early November 26, it is expected to strengthen into the fifteenth storm of the year as it moves into the southeastern area of the central East Sea.

Over the following 48 to 72 hours, the storm is projected to move mainly westward at 15 to 20 kilometres per hour and may continue to intensify. Forecast models suggest a likely track toward Vietnam’s south central and southern coastline.

From the evening of November 25, the eastern waters of the central and southern East Sea will see winds increasing to level 6 or 7, with gusts reaching level 10 and waves rising to 3 to 5 metres. Rough seas are expected.

Between the nights of November 26 and 28, the central and southern East Sea may experience winds of level 9 or 10, gusting to level 13. Vessels operating in affected areas could face thunderstorms, whirlwinds, strong winds and large waves.
