It's clam season on the Ngan Pho River which attracts lots of local residents to come for big catches.

A local woman, Nguyen Thi Ha, said that she can catch up to between 30-40 kilos of clams after some six hours, which she sells for about VND300,000-450,000. "It's a hard work but it brings good income so we all try when the season comes," Ha said.

The woman shared that clam catching had been a local tradition for many generations.

"We can all do this work using simple tools, so you can see lots of people catching clams in the river now," she said. "We just use a basket fixed in a frame made of iron or bamboo to catch the clams but we have to use lots of energy in this work."

Another local resident, Nguyen Van Lan said that clams can be made into popular dishes including soup, salad, or stir fried with herbs, so they always sell well at local markets.

"Sometimes restaurants and traders come to wait for us at the river and buy our catches," Lan said. "The clam season lasts just one or two months before the floods arrive."
